Organised in collaboration with the Global Practice Unit borderless MA in architecture

Following a far-reaching inspection of the resources of the park, you will go on a journey into landscape and drawing with Peter Märkli, one of the world's most revered and creative architects. You will have the opportunity to become Märkli's assistants and help translate his proposal for a new landscape-scale artwork into drawings and prototypes so this ambitious project can be realised by 2020.

Parallel to this, we will build our very own educational centre in Nikola-Lenivets. Our colleague, UK-based designer and educator Thomas Randall-Page, will lead the collective design process through drawing and modelling workshops. You will forage for building materials and test construction techniques, in order to construct an architectural intervention using your intellectual and physical labour and our hand and power tools.
This year's Summer School explores the role of art and making in today's economy and ecology of means. What is the relationship between art and labour in tomorrow's world? How can art generate and support communities? How can we build a sustainable future for the rural landscape in Russia and beyond? We will work on a real-life projects in Nikola-Lenivets Art Park which will respond to this challenge.

Results and Opportunities

The international Summer School at Nikola-Lenivets is a perfect opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in designing and building an architectural intervention in a beautiful natural landscape. Teams are international and are composed of young architects and artists. In 2017 we had participants from the UK, Italy, Latvia and Russia. Peer to peer learning and ideas exchange is just as important as the knowledge you receive from the School's tutors.

We invite tutors and experts from the Umea School of Architecture, Sweden, ETH, Zurich, the AA, UK, University of Brighton, UK, MARCH, Russia, as well as others. The tutors for each school are confirmed a month before the start date.

Invited tutors of previous schools include Thomas Randall-Page, designer, tutor at the AA and Oxford Brookes, Kate Goodwin, Head of Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts, artist and architect Alexander Brodsky, Dasha Paramonova, CEO of Strelka Architects, Niall Hobhouse, art collector, curator and public figure, Julia Bychkova, Director of Archstoryanie Festival, Robert Sollis, Director of Europa, as well as experts in timber construction and forestry.

There will be a public presentation of the School's results on the last day of your stay.
