Organised in collaboration with the Global Practice Unit borderless MA in architecture
For two weeks this June, join the world renowned land-artist Nikolay Polissky, founder of Nikola-Lenivets Art Park, to create a new work in the park using local renewable materials and traditional craft techniques. Learn how to make landscape a part of your design and how to create striking views onto a beautiful work of public art.

The second half of the Summer School will be dedicated to a technologically advanced data-driven mapping exercise to scan the 600 hectares of the park and create a 3D model, setting out new routes and visual connections for Park visitors. The mapping workshop is led by Anastasia Zaytseva, urbanist and PhD candidate at EHT Zurich in the field of robotics in architecture and planning.

The Nikola-Lenivets Art Park Summer School runs for 12 days in the scenic setting of the largest art park in Europe. Participants have an intense programme of research walks, seminars, drawing and hands-on construction workshops using hand and power tools. Groups are multidisciplinary and of different nationalities and backgrounds, making each team uniquely dynamic and creative.
This year's Summer School explores the role of art and making in today's economy and ecology of means. What is the relationship between art and labour in tomorrow's world? How can art generate and support communities? How can we build a sustainable future for the rural landscape in Russia and beyond? We will work on a real-life projects in Nikola-Lenivets Art Park which will respond to this challenge.

Results and Opportunities

The international Summer School at Nikola-Lenivets is a perfect opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in designing and building an architectural intervention in a beautiful natural landscape. Teams are international and are composed of young architects and artists. In 2017 we had participants from the UK, Italy, Latvia and Russia. Peer to peer learning and ideas exchange is just as important as the knowledge you receive from the School's tutors.

We invite tutors and experts from the Umea School of Architecture, Sweden, ETH, Zurich, the AA, UK, University of Brighton, UK, MARCH, Russia, as well as others. The tutors for each school are confirmed a month before the start date.

Invited tutors of previous schools include Thomas Randall-Page, designer, tutor at the AA and Oxford Brookes, Kate Goodwin, Head of Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts, artist and architect Alexander Brodsky, Dasha Paramonova, CEO of Strelka Architects, Niall Hobhouse, art collector, curator and public figure, Julia Bychkova, Director of Archstoryanie Festival, Robert Sollis, Director of Europa, as well as experts in timber construction and forestry.
